Bringing LA to the ATL
Well so much for southern hospitality, I know ATL is not really southern, at least that is what everyone tells me. And well I would have to agree. We have not had an overwhelming difference in NICENESS since being here. So we deciced. No, not we. I decided I was going to show these southerners how to be kind. Its called welcoming the new neighbors. So we made cookies and met our neighbors this afternoon. Carlos complained the whole time but I am glad to know Gary, Murphy, Louanne, and Mary.
Ok, this is SO funny...because this is something I would do. In fact, I HAVE! :)
I have been meaning to leave a comment on your blog for the past few weeks. This blog thing is sometimes so weird and can be creepy, but I can promise, that I am not that. I don't know you and you don't know me. Ok ...here is how i got to your blog. My friend Sara Karlson from Clovis who is the MOMS Director at Peoples Church is one of my good friends. I met Jacinda through her. I don't really KNOW Jacinda as I have just met her here and there. Anyways, after reading Saras blog, I saw Jacindas blog and then your blog. Get it? That is how I got here! Anyways, your blog interested me as you are a CALI girl who moved to the ATL.....guess what????? Yes, I'm a Cali girl (my whole life) and am moving to the ATL too in May!! We moved from Vegas to Clovis to the wine country and now to the ATL. My husbands job is taking us there. Anyways, like I said, I have been meaning to get in touch w/you (don't know any other way) so maybe we can chat via email or something as I have two little girls (2 & 3) and would love any recommendations you could give me. I have a blog, but it is private, but I could add you if I had your email (I didn't see it on your blog page).
I will check back on your comment section in the hopes of getting in touch.
Thanks,
Amy (you can tell Jacinda that I'm the blonde one with the two little girls....maybe she will remember me???!!) :)

I moved to IN almost 2 years ago. I couldn't believe that no one came to introduce themselves for over 3 weeks! I ended up making about 10 loaves of pumpkin bread and introducing myself. They all thanked me after eating the bread, but have resorted back to their un-neighborly ways.

We took Christmas cookies to all of our neighbors about a month after we moved in here and they all stared at us like we were nuts. We still only know one elderly couple and we usually just get a wave. Atlanta is weird like that.

Look how cute you are! Can you come and make them for my neighbors when we move??

We live in Alpharetta and I would love to have you as a neighbor. I don't think it is the "southerners" that aren't friendly. I seem to find it is a lot of the transplants that don't go out of their way. Welcome to the south from a "southerner"!

Good for YOU! living as an example of how to act like a real neighbor! Wish y'all were in Texas - we'd give you a pounding (nothing dangerous or kinky - it is where everyone brings a pound of something for the new folks). Anyhow - good on you Miz Whittaker - and surprised at the ATL not stepping up -

Next thing you know you'll be saying "y'all" and drinking mint juleps on the veranda.

Hmmm....that is what I need to do. We've only met 2 of our neighbors in passing and we've been here 2 months. I guess that's not that long but now I feel like it would be awkward...like, "oh, you live next door to me and I don't know you"...you know? So maybe I will shamelessly copy your good-neighborlyness. What did your cute note say on the cookies?
Posted by: Joanna | March 02, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Our note said something like...
Hi we are the whittaker family and we just wanted to say HI. If you ever needed to get a hold of us our phone #. I then told them what lame neighbors they were. :) No, I just said it was nice to meet them. Nothing fancy. H

What a great idea, Heather! I wish I'd been better about that when we moved here to the ATL area too, but now feel like it's too late.
People get too busy, but we should never be too busy to be neighborly. Thanks for taking the time to model that for others.

Wow kudos to you I'm super shy with people kind of sad. You'd think at 24 I'd be over that. What's sadder is I can talk to people through a blog and or e-mail see them in person and clam up. So thanks for the little boost of inspiration to be more neighborly and not so timid = )

you go girl!

If you were my new neighbor, I would have made you brownies. You go girl - I love it. Your blog inspired me to take the plunge. You just keep it real. Thanks for taking the fear out of blogging for me. I wanted to let you know I've started my own blog and I have you as a link. Check out my blog at www.tahnivoelz.blogspot.com and if you like what you see you can link me!

you are not from LA!

Well - I've lived here in the 'burbs of ATL since 1994 and the problem is that most are Transplants not True Southerners. Especially in the Butt'Head area of town where you are. Shame on your neighbors for not being nicer, however they might be from the North and just don't know better!
