Cricket?
Carlos claims this is a cricket, I am not so sure.
It does not look like the crickets we have in Cali.
When Sohaila got this bug house for her 5 year birthday,
I was not sure we would use that often, and boy has this
move to Georgia PROVED ME WRONG! We have had
bug #!, a frog, and now this all in three days! So fun. H

I think Carlos is right, we just grow'em big in the South!
Loved BooMama's reenactment of giving you directions in Birmingham last week! I have a bit of a southern drawl myself and it made me laugh out loud!

He's right. I only know this because I referred to them as jumping spiders for a very long time. Actually convinced myself that they were deadly. I brought someone over here to see the deadly jumping spiders....adn i learned they are just crickets. But they don't grow these suckers in Mississippi. Same goes with that other nasty bug you showed us recently. It's a Georgia thing.

One name for those little critters is camel crickets (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave_cricket), but I can think of some other names ...
They're gross, and they freak me out a bit. They're fast, too. When I first moved to Georgia, I lived in a basement apartment with some of those things. It was only temporary, thank goodness. That's how I got through it, by reminding myself that it was just for a little while. Ick.

We have them in Oklahoma too! We call them "Makers" here. Not quite sure why....Great way to kill them...Kaboom shower cleaner!! :)

Do you still have that thing from the other day? Apparently it eats insects. I'd put it in that bug house and just feed it everything you find, kinda like a weird pet.
But I guess that's kinda a boy thing, eh? Animals devouring other animals. Maybe save that for Losiah.

yeah, i'm pretty sure that's a cricket.. i think they look different depending on which area of the country you live in. i remember the seeing the ones in so-cal for the first time..they were super huge and there was no shortage of them. speaking of huge bugs...there were these huge disgusting ones in riverside that people called 'waterbugs'..i'm pretty sure they were giant roaches..do u know what i'm talkin' about?

Your bug posts have pretty much convinced me never to move to the South.

Yes, it is a cricket we have them here in Indiana too. You should just blame it on the Red Clay....it just makes everything difficult. have a great day Heather.

We had those in New Jersey too. They were pretty much in the basements. My neighbor whacked them with a broom but what worked best was those sticky pads used for killing mice (I'd never, ever use them for mice tho - too cruel). They catch those cricket critters pretty well (and anything else that walks across it - like my cat did)!

Frogs are one of the best parts of GA. I used to chase those things all the time when I was a kid!

Oh my! I really despise those things - and they can get huge. We get them in our unfinished basement a lot and I loathe going down there to do laundry because they startle me when they jump out. They make me wish Matt wasn't allergic to cats!

EWW! We have those things in Maryland, too. They used to be in the basement of my parents house all the time, especially when it had been raining a lot. I couldn't stand them.

we call those cave crickets in our family. My room was in the basement of our old house and they were always in my room. I HATE them!!! Ewwwwwwww!!!

I think this is a "Camel-back Cricket." We had them in our dorms in college. Yuck. They jump! And always right toward you!! I leave these guys alone. :0)

I have NEVER seen a cricket like that...and they say all things are BIGGER in Texas...maybe not.

Oh good Lord! We call those spider or camel crickets! They are terrifying!!! I am seriously a basket-case when I even see one. I swear when I still lived at home, I heard one eating my dog's food in my parents' basement! And they can jump liike 50 feet...okay maybe like 5...but still...freaky!!!!!

I have another quick but gross story about those nasty things...
My husband and I lived in a basement-level apartment for a year and we would sometimes get those crickets. Well, one Saturday after a heavy rain, I was getting dressed after my shower and I threw on the jeans I had worn the day before. They had been sitting on a chair in our room all night. As I put them on, I felt something near my right knee in my jeans. I reached down into the pant leg and pulled back a wet hand with a leg on one of my fingers. I screamed bloody murder and was out of those jeans in one leap. My husband came running in, certain that someone had broken in and was attacking me. When I took the jeans off, my suspicions were correct...it was a dreaded camel cricket that I unknowingly killed in my jeans leg with my BARE HAND...oh the horror!!!

I met my first cave cricket when we bought our house. Thankfully the cats and Terminix took care of that problem. I still see one every once in a while and they totally creep me out! I couldn't believe it when I first saw it, I thought it was a weird spider.

Yep, Camel Cricket. I had them in our basement when I was growing up in southern Kentucky. I swear some of them looked big enough to rip their legs off and serve with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob.
