Stone Mountain, Diva Style

A few weeks ago when we hiked Stone Mountain the girls saw the cable car and wanted to go on the RIDE vs using their legs. I explained to them that as their mother I will never pay to get on top of a mountain, but I also told them they could try to work their magic on a grandma and that is what they did. Nani fell for their plan and off we went to Stone Mountain to ride the tram to the top.

If Only My Children Were Like Their Great Grandma!

DSC_0562
In case you can't read the letter above, which was written by my grandma it says " Dear Parents, the coming of the Holy Infant makes every boy and girl think of how good and obedient he was.  I know dear parents how often I have made you sad by disobeying you; But now I am oh so sorry for all , and I am going to be a better child hereafter." Nannan
Is that not powerful! My grandma wrote that to her parents 76 years ago. I would fall out of my chair if ever any of my offspring would write something like this. H

Puke, Diarrhea, Sore Throats and Daley!

Halloween

It was a late night last night, lets be simple...

What were you, your kids or simply what did you do?
The girls wanted to be cheerleaders, I was a chef and Losiah my lobster, and Carlos busted out the oldie but goody which is not a oldie here! So share what about you? H

Do you hold your breath when you go through a tunnel? I don't. Well I take that back. I do, but only one   tunnel. The one that is right before you hit the Yosemite Valley. I have no idea how long it is, but it is long enough to make me turn blue. It's just something my brother and I have done all of our lives. The worst part is if you get behind a slow car or the driver of your car is being really mean to you and slows down. Oh its hard but oh so fun. So tell me are we the only ones who do this? h

A Good Idea

DSC_2634
This was my idea. A nice evening picnic at sunset. Just a wonderful evening as a family.

But Seanna brought her guns... She was full of ammunition.

And even before dinner was served she was getting a TALK.

Family Night # 23, Seanna's First Party

Since we were in LA last weekend. I thought I would have a party for Seanna with our friends and family from So Cal. For some reason, Seanna usually gets gypped for her b-day and I thought I would make up by giving her two parties. One in Cali, and one in GA. So we spent time as a family celebrating our girl this week.
She wanted a cooking party...
DSC_2393
Which was so easy because I just used what was in the kitchen! I used the mixing bowl for chips, a collander or the grapes, and cake pans to layer and put plates on.
DSC_2433
Everyone made their own pizza, Seanna did hers first.
DSC_2429
I wore a chef outfit while I rolled out dough.
DSC_2490
The kids then decorated the their own cupcakes. Really this party was great, the guest did their own cooking! What a big time saver!

Now I know this was not our traditional Family Night, it was a time where we were able to spend time with our loved ones. How do you spend time with yours?

Mama and Papa ( And Please Say it With a Hispanic Accent)

This is Mama, Carlos' maternal grandmother. DSC_2365
I envy her cooking skills. I can do her frijoles pretty well, but I long to know what else is up her sleeve. The problem is... She does not speak English. Which makes cooking lessons a little difficult. Look what she cooked for us when we came to visit. NOW WE ARE TALKING!
DSC_2376
I actually tried to make it, just like she told me to and it did not come out as good as hers.

Mama would fill Carlos' plate anytime it got close to being empty...

The Fresno Fair is a Great Big Fair, Don't Miss it Don't Even Be Late

Oh I was so excited to find out that we will be in Fresno during the fair. It is such a fun thing to do in Fresno, everyone looks forward to it. Jacinda, Brian and my family all went for the day. It was great.

Ok this is not fair food, but we did stop at Dog House before to fill our tummy's with this tri-tip sandwich. Heaven. Really I mean it is so sinful that you just do not care about the consiquences of eating it.

Oh if only I had a video. Just imagine this in real life. I wanted to give the poor mother some vicadine or something for what these little guys were doing to her. Oh my boobs ached for her.

Sohaila has been studying the continents and oceans in school. She has been asking non-stop about the PACIFIC Ocean. Mom when can we see the pacific ocean? Are we near the pacific ocean? Family Night #21 Baseball Night

Well this week is a bit crazy... So we took our family night on the road! Which the kids thought was the best. Carlos had band practice and so we took our family night to him! We did baseball night right at church! We made our own baseball cards.

Some of us sported the look. My baseball cap was not even a baseball team... Opps.     IMG_9578

Can you tell Seanna was in a mood. That's my girl!

A Year Ago Today, Losiah Became a Whittaker

So yes a year ago today marks our move,  but it also marks the day Losiah officially became a Whittaker.  Our adoption paper work was a long road and it has officially been 365 days of having that weight off of my shoulders! What a relief!

Georgia on my mind

People ask me all he time what I think about living in Georgia. They want to know how it differs from living in California. So I have decided to start a post series called...Georgia on my mind. I am simply gonna share the things I see everyday that are different. I love Georgia, I would not move back if I could... someday, but right now I am  happy where I am at. So here goes my new series.

Your parents parents... What do you call them?
I must admit, my family is full of nick names... We have Nani, Nannan, Nana, Kiki, Lita, Mama, Papa, Tia, We've had Tata, Nino, Nina, Pop-pop, and the traditional Grandma.  Some of the names are traditional and others are random and off the wall.
I have heard tons of names, well at least I thought I had.
This weekend we were at a birthday party and I was handed the duty of writing the who gave what list. I was so embarassed because half of the names I had NEVER heard before and had no idea how to spell them. There was MeMaw, MeMe , Mama, Nanny, Mom-Mi,  Grand Dow, Poppy  and all the grand dads. I did the best I could, but it was just one of those moments I realized I am not in Cali anymore.

What do you call your grandparents, what do your kids call your parents? H

Grandma!

We had a surprise visit from Grandma Sherry and Amy for the past two days.
There is just nothing like Grandmas! H

Our Adoption Story...

It was fall of 2004, when I was watching an Oprah Winfrey Show that unveiled the inhumane stories that were taking place in South Africa. The show educated the public and myself of an epidemic where babies as young as 5 months are being raped. There is a myth being spread in Africa that if you have sex with a virgin you will then become cured from AIDS. Consequently children, infants were being robbed of their humanity.  This story broke me. My heart began to grieve for them and desire to give life to soul that had been lost.  I struggled with this for a month or so. Finally I broke down and told Carlos that I want to adopt. At this time I was thinking in our future, after our biological children were raised. Then we could adopt a child whose soul has been stripped from them and build them back to who God intended them to be. Carlos was 100% on board from day one.
It was not but a month later Carlos and I were watching Oprah (again) and she did a special on orphanages in China.  This time Carlos was moved. He began talking about adopting a girl from China. We still were thinking that this was later in our future, not now. Shortly after these two shows Carlos had a dream that made him question why we were waiting to adopt. Why not now?  When he told me about the dream we talked about it and decided that we would look into the process. We have always wanted 4 children and we loved the idea of having our adopted child be right in the middle of our biological children. We decided to begin the process!
Carlos and I have followed Steven Curtis Chapman and have seen his presentation on adoption, so we decided to start with his organization. We trusted in the agencies he was recommending. We started with his list and one by one the doors were closed. We didn’t know that there were so many requirements of the parents. We looked into Africa but at that time non of his agencies adopted from Africa.  We then looked into China but they had a requirement was that both parents had to be 30 and I was not 30 yet.
Those were our two countries that were on our heart, at that point we didn’t know where were going to adopt from. We only had one final agency to look into. We were feeling sad and defeated. Maybe our decision to adopt now was not right. Our final agency to look into was Holt International. We began to read their requirements and we matched perfectly with Korea. We matched their requirements and they matched ours.  Korea it was.
We began the application and attended the first class. We were excited to learn that we would be adopting a boy. We just naturally thought we would be adopting a little girl just because we had 2 girls of our own, plus the two adoption stories on Oprah were based on girls. So it was an exciting shock to hear that Korea favors mixed gender families and that they would be place with a boy.
The application took longer than we had expected. There were a few bumps in the process but finally things got well on our way. We were assigned to Losiah in July of 2006! Here is the post from Carlos' blog on the day we were assigned to him...

Losiah

So Heather and I have been waiting for our “assignment” to come from South Korea. Waiting for months to find out who will be joining our family. I am sitting in a Days Inn parking lot in Oakhurst, CA because we just got a phone call from our social worker that we have been assigned. PRAISE GOD!!! God is shining bright upon us right now. We are overjoyed.

Meet MY SON…Baek Dae-Selok (Korean Name)
His new name will be Losiah. ;) We are unsure as to which Korean names to incorporate. We will decide soon,

God is Good,
Los

The final months before we traveled to pick him up,  were filled with fund raisers, preparing, and lots and lots of stress!
With the assurance God gave us about this decision, we also had  peace that he will also provide the means to pay for this child. From the beginning God knew our income and we have to believe that if he is leading us to this decision he will lead us in the financial aspect of this process too.  And he did. We had 61 cents in our savings when we entered into this decision and because of  our family and friends and a couple of grants we were able to pay for all the expenses that came our way.
We finally got the call to go pick up our boy in November. We did have a few more bits of drama before that wonderful call came. He was coming home!

I think you will be able to spend hours reading our story, if you don't have time for them all look at this post and watch these two, they are my favorite. If you have a day or two... start on Carlos' blog and go to November 2006 and enjoy. It is quite the story!

Wow, that was a lot of info! Thanks for hanging on! I could go on and on. I would love to answer any questions you have so ask away. I also would love to hear your stories, if you are or think you are going to adopt lets make a carnival of this. If you are or thinking about adopting, tell us your story.

Living with the Whittakers

OOPS, sorry I did not post today. Can you believe it is 8pm and its the first time I've looked at my blog. I just realized the post I had scheduled did not post. Wow mark that in the record books!

I love co-living, well at least with those who we have lived with...

Every experience has been different. And yet each of the experiences have confirmed that we love to live with other people. The help, the support, the community is just so worth it!  We will continue to do it. I think we live in a world that has fallen away from relationships. I think we have alienated ourselves from each other, which only leaves many of us lonely and overwhelmed. I want my life and my families lives to be as rich as possible. We were blessed to have people welcome us into their home when we needed it and we will do the same for others!

Run it to the ground

I grew up in a household where we fixed everything. I mean everything, plumbing, car issues, air conditioning. EVERYTHING. I remember one time. One time we had someone come into our house to help my dad. I am not as extreme as my parent were/are, but once and a while I see glimpse of things that remind me of them. Hey if it still works keep using it. Right?

Can you see it? My T has been gone for a month now. I could take it in, but why it works.
Who's like me out there? Any run it to the ground kind of people? H

The Toof...

Summer is in the air, part 2

IMG_0458
So the saga continues, the little birds hatched. Momma bird would constantly bring them insects of all sorts and then it happened... Dun, Dun, Dun.
My dad  had a great idea of celebrating my birthday with fireworks. I know where some of your minds just went, and let me stop you right now the birds were not part of a tragic firework accident.
Ok back to the story, the night of my birthday we went outside to light sparklers and roman candles. It was quite festive and fun. My sparkler was finished and I wanted another one so I asked my dad where he put them. I looked over and he placed all the boxes right on top of the birds. OOPS! The next morning I went out there and all was good, babies alive and well. The following morning after that however, they were gone.  Thankfully there was no sign of a animal getting them like last time! The explanation to the girls was simple... They flew away, see they are no longer in the nest. :)  It's just so sad that we get so far and get left hanging.

One thing after another...

My poor brother came to visit at a terrible time. He was here two weeks the first week was our road trip and the second week was a week of recovery for me from the road trip. Needless to say, I was not able to give him my perfected tour of the ATL. So with less than 24 hours left together, we decided to loaded up the car and go camping!

DSC_7292
We drove out to Stone Mountain. For those of you who are not familiar with this area, Stone Mountain is a huge rock that protrudes from the earth and they call a mountain. It is cool, but when you grow up with this as your back yard it is hard to be awe-struck. The campground was beautiful! It was nestled right on the banks of the lake and had great views. The kids were so excited to play in the water. All was well, until we realized that swimming in the lake was prohibited, but being the good rule breaker that I am, we continued to swim! It was the hottest day of the year here. How could I tell these guys to get out of the water?

DSC_7280 DSC_7299
Anyways the day went on. It was hot! No, it was HOT! You know the kind of hot where you begin to loose all sense of rational thinking. Where you will simply do anything to keep cool. (Like swimming in the lake).
DSC_7276 DSC_7315
Around 6pm things began to look better. Carlos arrived, dinner was cooking and best of all the sun was going down. However, after a hour of dusk the heat had not let up. It was so bad that Carlos asked me if I was crying, because he saw "tears" rolling down my cheeks. Nope it was sweat! When that happened I threw in the towel and said I was done. I was 20 minutes away from my own bed and AC. There was no way I was going to sleep in this. I am a camper, I love to be dirty, I love to sleep on the ground, but the heat... NOPE not going to do it!

DSC_7329
My poor brother worked so hard to get he tent up, he was a good sport! Once we packed up, a storm rolled in and we were so glad to be on the way HOME! We did have to stop and get my brother's canvas bags off the roof! I am telling you it was one thing after another!
